Prepare for medical coding interviews with structured case explanations, honest answers and examples from your training. This October 2026 IMC guide offers practical ideas for medical coding learners.
Introduce your training accurately
Prepare a short introduction covering your education, training and areas you have practised. Distinguish classroom exercises from employment experience and name only credentials you actually hold. A clear, accurate introduction gives the interviewer a useful starting point for the conversation.
Explain a case step by step
Practise describing how you read a fictional case, identify documented terms, consult references and review unresolved questions. Explain why you took each step. If the exercise involves coding, describe the verification process rather than giving only the final answer.
Be comfortable checking a reference
If you do not know an answer, say what you would need to check and how you would find it. Avoid confidently inventing a rule or a code. In mock interviews, ask your trainer to include unfamiliar scenarios so you can practise responding thoughtfully under pressure.
Prepare examples of improvement
Choose a classroom example where feedback changed your approach. Explain the difficulty, your review process and what you learned. Ask about the employer’s training, review process and role expectations. Requirements vary, so prepare for the specific job description rather than assuming every role is identical.
